Why learn Dutch?
Everyone speaks English anyway, right?
Well… not quite. Here are 10 good reasons to start learning Dutch

1. Not everyone speaks English.
Especially not the over-40 crowd. Some Dutchies break into a sweat at the word "conversation." Expect broken English… or just an awkward smile.
2. It’s actually fun!
Learning a language doesn’t have to feel like school. Add some fresh air, good company, and a stroll, and boom — you're having a great time and learning.
3. It’s less awkward when you’re not alone.
You're not the only one saying “ik zijn moe”
With us, you’ll laugh together, learn together, and make mistakes together. Way more “gezellig” than solo studying.
4. You’ll actually understand what’s on the news.
From “press conferences” to “farmers protests” — Dutch news makes a lot more sense when you’re not just watching the weather report.
5. Everyday life gets way easier.
Like calling the right dentist. Or figuring out what the school WhatsApp group is freaking out about. Or knowing that “gratis af te halen” means someone’s giving away their old sofa — not that it's a hot deal.
6. Planning to become a Dutch citizen?
You’ll need it. The integration exam is required — and it’s in Dutch. So yes, you’ll need to know how to say “maatschappij” without twisting your tongue.
7. Want to integrate? Start with the language.
Joining a sports club, chatting at work, making Dutch friends — all of it starts with understanding what people are saying (and being able to answer without panicking).
8. Respect goes both ways.
The Dutch love directness and appreciate people who make an effort. Learn the language, and you’ll earn more respect, more connection, and maybe even an extra cookie with your coffee ;).
9. In-laws.
Maybe it’s not relevant yet, but imagine dating a Dutchie one day. Their parents probably won’t speak English, but they’ll definitely want to talk about your life plans. In Dutch. Good luck without it!
10. Understanding the language = understanding the culture (yes, even our ‘rude’ jokes)
Dutch people are famously direct — in conversations, opinions, and yes, humor. Once you start understanding the language, you’ll finally get why your colleague cheerfully says: “Niet lullen maar poetsen” which roughly means “Enough talking, time for action.”It sounds a bit harsh at first, but it’s said with love (usually). Welcome to the Dutch way!
